The Precision Push: A Monthly Handgun Drill to Master Speed and Accuracy

Purpose

This drill is designed to develop speed, accuracy, and efficient target transitions under realistic defensive conditions. It forces shooters to control recoil, manage sight picture, and maintain precision under time pressure — key skills for both concealed carriers and tactical shooters. At Big Bee Bee LLC we continue to be dedicated to helping you become the best self defender you can be.

Gear Requirements

  • Handgun of choice (duty or carry weapon)
  • Minimum 2 magazines
  • 50 rounds of ammunition
  • Shot timer or timer app
  • 3 IPSC or IDPA silhouette targets (or 8.5×11 paper sheets marked with 6-inch circles)
  • Holster (strong-side or appendix, consistent with your everyday carry setup)
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Range marker cones or tape to mark distances

Range Setup

  • Place Target 1 at 5 yards, Target 2 at 7 yards, and Target 3 at 10 yards in a horizontal line, spaced 2–3 yards apart.
  • The shooter starts from concealment or duty holster at the 5-yard line.
  • Magazines: One loaded with 6 rounds (primary), one with at least 6 rounds (reload).

Drill Overview

You’ll engage each target in a controlled sequence, emphasizing first-shot speed, follow-up precision, and target transition discipline. Each stage builds on the last.

Drill Steps

Stage 1: Controlled Pairs (Warm-Up)

  • From the holster, on the beep:
    • Draw and fire 2 rounds into Target 1.
    • Reholster safely.
  • Repeat for Target 2 and Target 3.
  • Focus: smooth draw, sight alignment, and clean trigger press.

Goal:

  • All rounds within the 6-inch circle.
  • Average draw-to-first-shot under 1.75 seconds (carry gun standard).

Stage 2: The Transition Test

  • From the holster, on the beep:
    • Engage Target 1 with 2 rounds,
    • Transition to Target 2 with 2 rounds,
    • Transition to Target 3 with 2 rounds.

Goal:

  • Total 6 rounds fired.
  • All hits inside 6-inch circles.
  • Par time: 5.0 seconds or less.

Stage 3: Speed Reload Precision

  • From the holster, on the beep:
    • Engage Target 1 with 2 rounds,
    • Perform a speed reload,
    • Engage Target 2 with 2 rounds,
    • Engage Target 3 with 2 rounds.

Goal:

  • Smooth reload under 2.5 seconds.
  • All hits in 6-inch scoring zones.
  • Par time: 7.5 seconds or less.

Stage 4: The Precision Push (Full Drill)

  • Combine all elements into one continuous course of fire:
    • Start at 5 yards, from concealment.
    • On the beep:
      1. Draw and engage Target 1 with 2 rounds.
      2. Transition to Target 2 with 2 rounds.
      3. Transition to Target 3 with 2 rounds.
      4. Perform a speed reload.
      5. Re-engage Targets 1, 2, and 3 with 1 round each (focusing on precision after reload).

Total: 9 rounds per run.
Goal Conditions:

  • All hits in the 6-inch zones.
  • Total time: Under 10 seconds is excellent, 12 seconds acceptable.
  • Misses add +2 seconds per round to total time.

Training Tips

  • Don’t chase speed first — speed comes from efficiency. Get smooth, then fast.
  • Use shot calling: know if you hit before checking your target.
  • Record your runs on video to analyze grip, draw, and transition efficiency.
  • Repeat this drill once a month, tracking your time and hit percentage.

Safety Reminders

  • Always verify your range’s rules on holster draws and movement.
  • Always treat every weapon as if it were loaded
  • Keep your muzzle pointed downrange at all times.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to fire
  • Know your target and beyond
  • Conduct a dry run before going live to ensure smooth, safe motions.

Summary

The Precision Push balances both ends of the skill spectrum — speed under stress and precision when it counts. It’s a compact yet challenging monthly benchmark for any shooter looking to level up.
